One part we get a lot of questions about is the muffler. How important is this car part and what do you need to know about taking care of it? We can tell you everything you need to know.
What Does a Muffler Do?
The muffler is on the bottom of your vehicle, located towards the rear, and it has one important job. It makes your car quieter. Without a muffler, your car would make a ridiculous amount of noise.
The inside of your muffler is made up of tubes that can direct sound waves and chambers that can help cancel them out. To keep things simple, your muffler is able to cancel out sound waves with other sound waves, keeping your car operating smoothly without wrecking anyone’s eardrums.
When Does a Muffler Need to be Replaced?
Generally, mufflers last between five and seven years in most vehicles. If you encounter a lot of potholes, speed bumps, or bumpy terrain, that lifespan can get a little bit shorter.
The biggest signs of muffler trouble are, perhaps not surprisingly, excess noise. If your car is running and making more noise than other, that could be an issue. You might also hear rattling noises that indicate a loose part that could affect performance.
